What makes a campus attractive for universities and companies?

CoreNet hosted a breakfast session at the Technical University of Delft on the 24th of April. Sessions’ theme was ‘Attractive campuses’, which is a global actual theme for cities around the world. Ellis ten Dam (Boardmember CoreNet chapter Benelux and Director Business Unit at Royal HaskoningDHV) facilitated this interactive session with 30 professionals. The programme consisted of discussions with the participants, presentations from experts and a panel discussion which was hosted by Erik Pasveer.

1. The campus of the future is a city
Real estate supports the primary tasks of knowledge institutions and creates their urban environment. Therefore, a university campus as real estate object never stands alone but forms an integral part of a socio-physical context. There are five aspects which are defining a campus: academic (education & research), residential, related business, retail & leisure and infrastructure. A good campus entwines these aspects and gives the city an economic impulse.

2. Think about what distinguishes you
Successful campuses have a clear idea of their identity and theme in order to create synergy for their universities and businesses. An example is Food City around Wageningen University which has a leading position for Food Technology in the world and therefore adds value for the university and companies based on this campus.

3. Serendipity stimulates innovation
Knowledge workers from the academic world as well as corporates are inspired and stimulated by the presence of talent and knowledge. By sharing an environment and increasing the transparency of processes, professionals learn from each other and resources are used more effectively. There is a meeting of minds which enables innovation.

4. Bring campus inhabitants together in a community
Invest in the ‘in between space’. Change the perspective from the private space to public space. Facilitate informal gatherings on all levels; the corridor in offices, a café in the building and public and social facilities on campus level. This does not have to be permanent facilities. Temporary facilities enable the organisation to act quickly and based on needs of the inhabitants.

5. Show what you do
Express the identity of the organisations on building and campus level. By doing so, it enables organisations to tell their story. This is an advantage for organisations and it creates a look and feel for visitors.

6. Keep in contact with your users
By defining the things that matter for your users; such as the value added aspects for the catering concept, the optimal solution can be determined. Involve user information in your decisions. Do not define solutions up front, but facilitate the process to involve user information in the decision making process.

Participants found the breakfast session very inspiring. Remarkable was the feedback of several participants about the similarity of worlds (-the knowledge institutes and the business world) to create good concepts for real estate and facilities. These concepts require similar characteristics and processes in order to beneficially support the primary processes of universities and companies.
